After Friday’s win against the Pittsburgh Pirates at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, manager Joe Girardi announced that Adam Haseley will be out four weeks with a moderate left groin strain.

He suffered the injury taking off for second Wholesale Philadelphia Phillies Jerseys on a 3-2 pitch to Rhys Hoskins in the fourth inning of Thursday’s game against the New York Yankees. Catcher Rafael Marchan and outfielder Jhailyn Ortiz both are out after tweaking a hamstring. The timetable for both hamstring injuries is around 24 days.

Haseley came into camp hoping to win the starting job in center field, but the injury will most likely keep him out beyond Opening Day.

“He’s really disappointed and he worked really hard this winter,” Girardi said on Friday. “He was playing really well, and was moving extremely well and it’s disheartening for him and frustrating. But I told him ‘Look, we love the way you were playing. Make sure that you’re healthy. … Because if you do it again, it’s going to be worse than the first time and then you’re going to be out even longer.’ He’s got to get over the emotional part of it because he was ready to go.”

Scott Kingery, Roman Quinn and Mickey Moniak are all currently on the 40-man roster and have a chance at winning the starting job in center. It’s important to keep in mind that Girardi could prefer a platoon at the position, especially if all three of Kingery, Quinn and Moniak equally impress the Phillies skipper throughout spring. Travis Jankowski and Odùbel Herrera are non-roster invitees who will get a look.

Injuries to both Haseley and Marchan create an unwelcoming roster conundrum for the front office. The Phillies will most likely look to give at least one 40-man roster spot to a non-roster bullpen arm. If, for example, David Hale does not make the team, he’s an obvious candidate to be designated for assignment. They will need an additional roster spot to open up through a DFA or trade if they want to add more than one non-roster player to the 40-man. Beyond Hale, there are not many obvious candidates to let go of. The team will have to give up on a young player or make a trade to create the roster space they need.

They may also need to make room for an additional catcher, most likely Jeff Mathis and his $1.8 million salary, if both Marchan and J.T. Realmuto are not healthy enough to be ready on Opening Day.

A 24-day timetable for Marchan takes the Phillies to March 29. According to Todd Zolecki of, non-roster relievers Brandon Kintzler, Tony Watson and Héctor Rondon all have an opt-out clause that can be exercised on March 24. The Phillies would have 48 hours to either add them onto the roster or release them. They could lose out on adding a non-roster bullpen arm if it’s clear that they need to add Mathis to the 40-man roster. The hope is that Realmuto will be ready to go for Opening Day, but nothing is certain.

As far as outfielders go, they can live with what they currently have on the 40-man roster. Non-roster outfielder Matt Joyce, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic, does not have an opt out, but he could still force his way onto the team with stellar play in the Grapefruit League. If not, an injury to Haseley could mean an extra bench spot for one of either C.J. Chatham, Nick Maton or Moniak if he doesn’t win the starting job.

In good Phillies injury news, Realmuto’s cast has been removed and replaced with a splint. He’s not hitting or throwing, but he was able to participate in a drill that simulates the motion of throwing without the ball in his hand.

“He is on track for us. This was a good sign and we’ll just have to see how the rehab continues to go,” Girardi said.

Update 1:38 – A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Adam Haseley injured his left groin heading to first following ball four on a 3-2 pitch. He was injured after taking off for second on a 3-2 pitch to the next batter, Rhys Hoskins

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski may have joined the Philadelphia Phillies organization late into this past offseason, but he still was able to make a flurry of moves to significantly improve the roster — particularly its bullpen — ahead of spring training.

Even though exhibition games do not matter, manager Joe Girardi has already reaped the rewards of Dombrowski’s work by having Philadelphia Phillies Jerseys China several relievers showing promising signs thus far through the Grapefruit League schedule. Many of them are non-roster invitees who are not even part of the 40-man Phillies roster. Here are three such relievers who could end up making the team.

1. Tony Watson
It was just a few weeks ago when the Phillies made a surprising, late-offseason signing of 10-year veteran Tony Watson to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

A former National League All-Star with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Watson has been among the most consistent relievers in Major League Baseball ever since he debuted for the team back in 2011.

This past season, the left-hander appeared in 21 games for the Gabe Kapler-led San Francisco Giants and posted a strong 2.50 ERA, 0.889 WHIP, and 15-3 strikeouts-to-walks ratio across 18 innings. The same year Watson earned a trip to the Midsummer Classic, he finished the season going 10-2 with a 1.63 ERA, and recorded the most appearances among pitchers in the National League, 78.

The Iowa native made his Phillies spring debut last Sunday in the team’s 4-0 loss to the New York Yankees. He struck out each of his two batters faced — looking and swinging — before walking a third batter and getting former Phillies outfielder Jay Bruce to fly out to end the inning. In his two appearances since, Watson has similarly held opponents scoreless while throwing one inning each. Through three innings overall this spring, he has struck out five batters while walking just one.

If Watson continues to have a strong showing in spring, he just might make the team’s Opening Day roster and complement Jose Alvarado — and possibly JoJo Romero and/or Ranger Suarez — as a left-handed reliever out of the bullpen.

“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” Rogers Hornsby

“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare at baseball news on Twitter and wait for Spring Training.” Tony Bps

With Spring Training games underway across the league, let’s take a look at which players the Phillies invited to attend mini-camp this year. The only prospect invited to Spring Training was catcher Rodolfo Duran, who we’ll take a look at more in a future deep-dive article. For now, let’s recap the players who are attended the Stitched Philadelphia Phillies Jerseys mini-camp and find out more about them and how they may or may not help your fantasy teams this year and in the future. The mini-camp is an alternative to the usual Minor League Camp, which was been postponed this year until April due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Players in both camps will work out at the same time but on different fields.

Edgar Cabral, C
Rank on my Phillies Preseason Top 50: Unranked
Who is he? Cabral was the team’s 11th round pick in the 2015 draft and hasn’t advanced above A ball yet, slashing a cumulative .249/.318/.362 with 17 home runs over 957 at bats in 5 seasons.
Odds of making Opening Day roster: 0%
Odds of being promoted in 2021: 0%
What would have to happen for him to be promoted? A massive injury bug to all of the catchers above Cabral in the pipeline along with injuries to most unemployed backup catchers.

Darick Hall, 1B
Rank on Preseason Top 50: 30
Who is he? Hall is a power-hitting first baseman who has been with the organization since being selected in the 14th round in the 2016 draft. Hall has always shown massive power, hitting 84 home runs in his 4 minor league seasons but has struggled with strikeouts and making contact with the ball.
Odds of making Opening Day roster: 0%
Odds of being promoted in 2021: 25%
What would have to happen for him to be promoted? Rhys Hoskins is recovering from elbow surgery and is expected to be fully recovered by the time the season starts, if not earlier but if that’s not the case, the team could call up Hall to help fill the void if he has a good showing this spring.
