After several successful seasons in New York with the Bronx Bombers, Didi Gregorius reunited with his manager Joe Girardi — as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies on a one-year deal — to take over at shortstop for the 2020 season. For the most part, Gregorius didn’t disappoint. In fact, he posted the second-highest Stitched Philadelphia Phillies Jerseys batting average, second-highest slugging percentage, and best on-base percentage of his nine-year career.

Becoming a free agent entering this offseason, there were serious questions as to whether Gregorius would be back in red pinstripes. After a long process, however, the Phillies inked him to a two-year deal worth $28 million. Gregorius adds stability at the plate and solid play in the field. What can we expect from him in terms of raw numbers for the 2021 season?

Predicting how Didi Gregorius will fare in his second season with the Phillies
Taking a look back, Gregorius became a starter in 2015 with the New York Yankees and hit .265 with nine home runs and 56 RBI. He came into his own the following season, adding power to his game. In fact, Gregorius increased his home run total to 20, beginning a three-year stretch with at least 20 homers in a season.

Gregorius missed much of 2019 after recovering from Tommy John surgery, but launched 16 home runs in 82 games — despite a relatively poor .238 batting average. Last season with the Phillies, Gregorius hit .284 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI with an offensive WAR of 1.2. Defensively, he was average, committing seven errors for a fielding percentage of .968 and defensive WAR of 0.1

Entering 2021, Gregorius is likely to bat sixth behind Alec Bohm and in front of Jean Segura. He should have plenty of RBI opportunities in a lineup that should be among the most productive in the National League.

Another 20-25 home run season for Gregorius is certainly a reasonable expectation. Add in 85 RBI, 80 runs scored and a .260 average to a lineup that could easily have five or six players reach 20-plus home runs. Gregorius won’t be great in the field, but should be competent and his offensive will make up for any defensive liabilities.

Chase Anderson Jersey

As the Philadelphia Phillies face the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon, Chase Anderson will get the start. This might be one of his last appearances in spring and he will have the opportunity to continue what has been a Wholesale Philadelphia Phillies Jerseys near-perfect Grapefruit League showing. Anderson probably couldn’t have envisioned a better start to his Phillies career.

In seven innings, he has surrendered just three hits and four walks with eight strikeouts and no runs. If Anderson has a strong outing opposite the Tigers, it could secure him a job in the starting rotation. There is no way to predict what the front office will do, but they would be foolish to not reward him for his performance.

Chase Anderson could be close to winning a spot in the Phillies rotation.
Anderson is coming off of an ugly 2020 season but that could be an outlier on his resume. Every year before that, he was at least a serviceable pitcher. He might not reach his 2017 peak performance ever again, but the Phillies just need him to pitch as he did in 2018 and 2019. Anything close to that would be an improvement over the back end of the Phillies rotation in recent seasons.

If Anderson secures his job, that would leave just one spot in the starting rotation for either Matt Moore or Spencer Howard. Moore is coming off of a solid performance against the Toronto Blue Jays in which he allowed five hits and two earned runs in four innings. It certainly wasn’t his best outing, but he has been fun to watch overall. After playing in Japan last year and getting a fresh start, he might be due for a bounce-back season. Howard might be best suited to start in Triple-A or the bullpen.

It looks like the Phillies rotation is starting to come together after they paid Anderson and Moore on one-year contracts. Let’s remember that spring training performance doesn’t always carry into the regular season though. This is just the first step for these guys. The real work will start in April when we will see how well they can perform and if they can pitch deep into ballgames. Let’s hope that’s the case, because the Phillies need them to step up.

The Philadelphia Phillies made the re-signing of Didi Gregorius official on Wednesday. After an impressive 2020 season, his first donning red pinstripes, the star shortstop will remain with the team on a two-year, $28 million contract.

Gregorius shined in 2020, slashing .284/.339/.488 with 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 40 RBI, 15 walks, and just 28 strikeouts spanning 237 plate appearances and all 60 games. But, for the nine-year veteran, he was far from satisfied with the Phillies’ overall season outcome — finishing one win short of its first postseason berth since 2011.

Coincidentally, the Phillies have never made the postseason ever since Gregorius first debuted in the majors as a 22-year-old — facing future Hall of Fame pitcher Roy Halladay in an early September 2012 contest.

Didi Gregorius has high hopes for the Phillies this coming season.
The Netherlands native believes the team has what it takes to end their postseason drought in 2021. “I’m always hungry to get to the playoffs. That’s what you play for and where you want to be,” Gregorius told reporters. “You want to be in the World Series. We have a great group of guys that can do that.”

Gregorius added that from top to bottom, everyone can do damage in the lineup and help each other out. “The team is going to be better. We came short last year, but this is a new year,” he said. “You have to go for it.”

When asked how close the team is to World Series contention, the shortstop acknowledged that they could always get better, but they have the players in place that if everyone does the job they are supposed to, the sky is the limit. “I think we are definitely going to be there and play even harder to win the World Series,” he said. “This team is good.”
